Superpave Asphalt Mix - Combined Aggregate Grading

Reference AASHTO M 325-08

AASHTO M 323-13 standard specifies minimum quality requirements for binder, aggregate, and asphalt mixtures for Superpave volumetric mix design.

Nominal Maximum Aggregate Size - One size larger than the first sieve that retains more than 10 percent aggregate.
Maximum Aggregate Size - One size larger than the nominal maximum aggregate size.
Nominal maximum aggregate size of the combined aggregate shall be 4.75 to 19.0 mm for HMA surface courses and not larger than 37.5 mm for HMA subsurface courses. When tested according to AASHTO T 11 and AASHTO T 27, the combined aggregate shall conform to the gradation requirements specified in the adjacent input table.
The combined aggregate gradation is classified as coarse-graded/fine-graded based on the Primary Control Sieve (PCS).The combined aggregate gradation is classified as coarse-graded when it passes below the PCS control point as defined below. All other gradations are classified as fine-graded.
  • For nominal maximum aggregate size of 37.5 mm; PCS = 9.5 mm and % Passing PCS control point = 47%.
  • For nominal maximum aggregate size of 25.0 mm; PCS = 4.75 mm and % Passing PCS control point = 40 %.
  • For nominal maximum aggregate size of 19.0 mm; PCS = 4.75 mm and % Passing PCS control point = 47 %.
  • For nominal maximum aggregate size of 12.5 mm; PCS = 2.36 mm and % Passing PCS control point = 39 %.
  • For nominal maximum aggregate size of 9.5 mm; PCS = 2.36 mm and % Passing PCS control point = 47 %.
