Standard Specifications for Aggregates

Materials for Aggregate and Soil–Aggregate Subbase, Base, and Surface Courses

Reference AASHTO M 147-17

AASHTO M 147-17 specification covers the quality and grading of gravel, stone, or slag screenings; or sand, crusher run coarse aggregate consisting of gravel, crushed stone, or slag with or without soil mortar; sand–clay mixtures; or any combination of these materials for use in the construction of subbase, base, and surface courses. Grading requirements of the soil-aggregate material is given in input table below.

General Requirements for Coarse Aggregates:
Coarse aggregate retained on the 2.00-mm (No. 10) sieve shall consist of hard, durable particles or fragments of stone, gravel, or slag. Materials should possess adequate freeze thaw resistance. Coarse aggregate shall have a percentage of wear of not more than 50 when tested as per AASHTO T 96 (Los Angeles test).
General Requirements for Fine Aggregates:
Fine aggregate passing the 2.00-mm (No. 10) sieve shall consist of natural or crushed sand, and fine mineral particles passing the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve. The fraction passing the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve shall not be greater than two thirds of the fraction passing the 0.425-mm (No. 40) sieve. The fraction passing the 0.425-mm sieve shall have a liquid limit not greater than 25 and a plasticity index not greater than 6. All material shall be free from vegetable matter and lumps or balls of clay.
Materials for sub-base and base course shall conform to Gradings A, B, C, D, E, or F. Materials for surface course shall conform to Gradings C, D, E, or F. In order to prevent damage by frost action, the engineer may specify lower percentages for materials passing the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve than that required in table given.

This TransCalc tool can be used to plot the particle size grading data for the sample and compare its conformity with respect to the specification limits. The input data can also be saved in the form of a pdf report. The plots are interactive and can be zoomed in or out and hovered over for additional data display. The traces can be switched ON/OFF by clicking on the respective tracename on the legend section of the plot. The plot can be saved by using the toolbars located on the top right of each plot. Please make use of the help texts provided in each input cell for further guidance on the usage of this tool.
