MATERIAL TESTING
Sieve Analysis of Mineral Filler for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)

Method of Tests

Sieve Analysis of Mineral Filler for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)

Reference AASHTO T 37-07 / ASTM D 546-05

AASHTO T 37-07 / ASTM D 546-05 standard covers the sieve analysis of mineral fillers used in hot mix asphalt (HMA).

Weigh Balance meeting the accuracy requirements of AASHTO M 231.

Sieves

Oven of appropriate size capable of maintaining a uniform temperature of 110 ± 5°C (230 ± 9°F).

Step 1: Sampling

Sample for the test is obtained in accordance with AASHTO M 17 and reduced to testing size in accordance with AASHTO T 248. The minimum quantity of dry material required for each sieve analysis is 100 g.

Step 2:

Dry the test sample to constant mass at a temperature of 110 ± 5°C (230 ± 9°F). Determine the mass to the nearest 0.1g.

Step 3:

Place the dry test sample on the 600-μm (No. 30) sieve, which is nested above the 300-μm (No. 50) and 75-μm (No. 200) sieves. The material is washed by a stream of water until the wash water coming through the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve is clear. The material retained on each of the three sieves are dried to a constant mass at a temperature of 110 ± 5°C (230 ± 9°F). The mass of material retained on each sieve is calculated as a percentage of the original sample.

Step 4:

All material (washed aggregate) retained on the nested sieves is returned to the container and dried to a constant mass. Determine its mass to the nearest 0.1 percent.
