Fine Aggregate for Bituminous Paving Mixtures

Reference AASHTO M 29-12/ASTM D 1073-09

AASHTO M 29-12/ASTM D 1073-09 specification covers fine aggregate for use in bituminous paving mixtures. Fine Aggregate shall conform to the grading requirements given in adjoining input table.

Fine aggregate is aggregate passing the 9.5-mm (3/8-in.) sieve and almost entirely passing the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve. It shall consist of natural sand, or of sand prepared from stone, or of crushed blast-furnace slag, or gravel, or combinations thereof. It shall consist of hard, tough grains, free of injurious amounts of clay, loam, or other deleterious substances.

ASTM C 125 defines Fine Aggregate as
(a) aggregate passing the 9.5-mm (3⁄8-in.) sieve and almost entirely passing the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve and predominantly retained on the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve; OR,
(b) that portion of an aggregate passing the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve and retained on the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve.
Please note that Definition (a) above is applied to an entire aggregate either in a natural condition or after processing while Definition (b) is applied to a portion of an aggregate.
For continuing shipments of fine aggregate from a given source, the fineness modulus shall not vary more than 0.25 from the base fineness modulus.
The plasticity index of the fraction passing the 425-μm sieve (No. 40) shall not exceed 4.0.
Supplementary Requirement The fine aggregate, when subjected to five cycles of the soundness test according to AASHTO T 104, shall have a weighted loss of not more than 15 percent when sodium sulfate is used or 20 percent when magnesium sulfate is used.

Using this Tool:
This TransCalc tool can be used to plot particle size grading of fine aggregates for HMA. The input data can also be saved in the form of a pdf report.
The plots are interactive and can be zoomed in or out and hovered over for additional data display. Individual traces can be switched on or off by clicking on the trace name in the legend section of the plot. The trace name clicked will switch off (become invisible) on single click and come back on (become visible) on next click. The plot can be saved by using the toolbars located on the top right of each plot.
Please make use of the help texts provided in each input cell for further guidance on the usage of this tool.
