Sieve Analysis - Particle Size Distribution (PSD) Comparison Plots

Mechanical (or Sieve) analysis is a general term used to define the determination of the size range of particles present in a soil/aggregates, expressed as a percentage of the total dry weight. Two methods are generally used to find the particle-size distribution of soil; (a) sieve analysis—for particle sizes larger than 0.075 mm in diameter, and (b) hydrometer analysis—for particle sizes smaller than 0.075 mm in diameter.

This TransCalc plotting tool can be used to plot and compare upto three particle size distribution plots from three samples with reference to a selected specification. The input data can also be saved in the form of a pdf report.

How to use this Tool:
1. Input the project and sample details in the respective fields in the 'INPUT - PROJECT & SAMPLE DETAILS' section. The typed in information will reflect in the generated plot and/or the generated pdf report. For more guidance, please make use of the helper text provided below each input cell.
2. Click on 'Insert Row' button in the 'PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION PLOTS' section to add the required number of rows (corresponding to the number of sieve sizes used in the sieve analysis test) and type in the details of Sieve size in first column and % passing values of the three samplesselected for comparison in the second to fourth columns.
If the results are to be compared with a reference standard specification, please input the appropriate '% Passing Upper Limits' and '% Passing Lower Limits' values in the last two columns.
3. Click on the 'Plot' button to display the PSD plot in the 'PARTICLE SIZE GRADING - CHART' section.
4. The generated particle size distribution plot is interactive and can be zoomed in or out and hovered over for additional data display. The plot can be saved by using the toolbars located on the top right of each plot.
5. Click on the 'Generate Report' button to open up a pdf report in a new tab.
Note: Please make use of the help texts provided in each input cell for further guidance on the usage of this tool.
